The emphasis of this session is to acknowledge ALL teachers' roles in preparing students for standardized tests: ACT, SAT, PSAT, AP. Abstract:
Eat, drink, sleep, and live the Senior Project in order to enhance communication skills, increase problem-solving abilities, perceive the real business world, and commit to community service. The completion of this ONE assignment allows for a flawless transition from secondary to post-secondary education and/or the work force.
Description:
With the increase in unfocused high school seniors, research reveals that through authentic instruction and personal ownership of academic achievement, these students will successfully focus on possible careers, national and international problems, and local community needs. By implementing a year-long program of “independent” study, students grow to become young accountable adults!
Big Ideas:
1. Student-selected research topics
2. Portfolios (print and electronic)
3. Verbal defense of research
4. Community Service involvement
5. Academic adjustments prior to senior year
Evidence:
In our high school over the past 12 years, every senior has been required to complete this assignment. Special needs and regular classroom learners both benefit from this rigorous opportunity while also gaining a personal sense of accomplishment. There is true ownership of education!
Audience:
Teachers and administrators—grades 9-12

TOPIC: Reading in the English Classroom
Mickie Knight, NBCT
Pisgah High School 2010
Abstract:
The integration of interpretive texts/classics as well as enlightening/entertaining texts is key to engaging students in a continual realm of reading. Approaches to teaching novels and plays should be geared toward finding "the sweet spot" while not overteaching or underteaching. "Framing" of the texts should employ various teaching strategies that are consistent with the long-term goals associated with the reading of the work.

"Get over the notion of students liking the book. What I care about is that all of my students see the value in reading. Students may or may not like the novel, but I want all of them to understand the value that comes from reading it." Readicide by Kelly Gallagher
